VISIT THE NEARBY NATURAL PARKS
Penyagolosa Natural Park: You can’t come to Les Useres without including a visit to Penyagolosa. This site lies between the villages of Xodos, Vistabella del Maestrat, and Villahermosa del Rio. And during your visit you can see traces left by the peoples who passed through here in ancient times.
In addition, the animal and plant species in this natural park are very varied. There are many kinds of pines, such as the “negral” “rodeno” and “albar”. In the higher zones there are juniper, oak and yew trees. With a little luck you may spot a mountain cat in its natural surroundings. And it’s also possible to see mountain goats, badgers, roe deer and genets.
Don’t keep your eyes at ground level however, because there’s a lot happening in the sky. Observe the flight of birds of prey such as the golden eagle, eagle owl, and Bonelli’s eagle. Cave-dwelling bats will be visible if you stay until sundown.
Columbretes Islands Natural Park: Set to sea and visit this archipelago of volcanic origin. This is the only place to spot some species which have almost disappeared from the mainland. For example, the Audouin Gull, the Eleanor Falcon, Cory’s Shearwater, and the Cormorant. Most impressive is the Columbretes lizard, exclusive to this habitat.
The islands were a hideout for fishermen, pirates and smugglers until the XIX century. After that, lighthouse keepers were the only residents apart from the wildlife. They were present here for a century. until the lighthouse was modernised in 1975. In 1988 the islands were declared a protected area, thus becoming the natural park we know today.
